How much do cotton t-shirts shrink? Shrinkage, compacting, and the spec that prevents it

Why cotton knits shrink (spinning and knitting tension, not magic), how much shrinkage is normal, what compacting does at the mill, the tolerance to put in your tech pack, and how to wash-test a sample before approving bulk.

Shrinkage feels like a defect. It’s physics: yarn is spun and knitted under tension, and the first hot wash lets the fabric relax to the size it always wanted to be. The whole trick is making that relaxation happen at the mill instead of in your customer’s machine, then writing the number into your spec.

What normal looks like

  • Untreated cotton jersey: 5–10% shrinkage, front-loaded into the first wash, enough to drop a size.
  • Compacted cotton: ±3–5%, the standard commercial tolerance, tested after three home launderings.
  • Cotton-poly blends: less again, polyester’s stability anchors the fabric. The blends guide.
  • Length vs width: knits shrink more in length; a garment that “got shorter and boxier” shrank exactly as physics predicts.

Compacting: the process that earns “pre-shrunk”

At finishing, the fabric is steamed and mechanically overfed so its loops compress into their relaxed geometry, shrinkage spent before cutting. It’s also what keeps a printed logo from distorting after wash one, and printed-panel garments aligned. A factory that can’t tell you whether its fabric is compacted is telling you something.

The three lines for your tech pack

  • Shrinkage tolerance: ±5% maximum after 3 washes (±3% for premium programmes), method stated (home laundering, 40°C).

How much does a cotton t-shirt shrink?
Untreated cotton jersey can shrink 5–10% in the first washes, most of it in wash one. Properly compacted (pre-shrunk) fabric holds to ±3–5%, which is the tolerance quality programmes specify. Length shrinks more than width.
Do pre-shrunk t-shirts still shrink?
A little — “pre-shrunk” means the mechanical shrinkage was largely taken out at the mill (compacting), not eliminated. Expect up to ~3% residual, mostly if tumble-dried hot.
What is compacting in fabric finishing?
A mechanical process that overfeeds the knit fabric and compresses its loops into their relaxed state before cutting, releasing the tensions from spinning and knitting so the garment doesn’t do it in your customer’s dryer.
Does polyester shrink?
Barely, polyester is heat-set and dimensionally stable, which is why 60/40 and 65/35 blends shrink noticeably less than 100% cotton and dominate uniform programmes.
